La Mirada, California
This is the La Mirada website for the Law Offices of Ben Yeroushalmi, Los Angeles Elder Abuse Attorneys who specialize in the fight against Elder Abuse and Nursing Home Negligence. We welcome you and wish to make you aware of the obligations that skilled nursing facilities have towards their patients, and what your options are if the facility has failed to meet those obligations.
The name La Mirada comes for the Spanish for "the view." The La Mirada Civic Center features a performing arts center and Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. Because of all the recreational facilities that the city has provided to serve the community, La Mirada was named one of the best places to live by CNN's Money Magazine. At the 2010 census, the population was 48,527. La Mirada has 2 Skilled Nursing Facilities.
In skilled nursing facility news, the 65 top hospitals of 2011 have been named by Leapfrog Group Modern Healthcare. This is thought to be the most competitive award for hospital quality in the country. The results came from a survey which was based on 3 general areas: the patients' well being, what resources are utilized to treat patients, and how management creates a safe and pleasant environment. Among the specific areas examined were pneumonia care and hand hygiene, the use of computers when recording and relaying doctors' orders, staffing levels, and patient experience. These top 65 hospitals naturally got high scores in every category. Unfortunately, the same is not true of many California nursing homes. The good news is that the "Top Hospital" award provides a standard for all skilled nursing facilities to aspire to.
Perhaps the greatest culprit in nursing home neglect is understaffing. Skilled nursing facilities time and again do not meet the minimum hours of nursing Health & Safety Code §1276.5-1276.65 demands. But the 3.2 hour per patient per day minimum is only the least amount required by law. The real needs of nursing home residents require a much larger patient to caregiver ratio--sometimes one-to-one. Without adequate staffing, your loved ones are in danger of nursing home injuries such as falls, dehydration and malnutrition, and a variety of infections including methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), scabies, clostridium difficile (C. difficile), and sepsis, not to mention influenza and pneumonia, all of which can lead to death.
