Located in the northern part of Antelope Valley, California City is a part of Kern County and was officially incorporated in 1965. According to the United States 2010 census, the city had a population of 14,120, making it the 331st biggest city in California by population. California City is also the state’s third largest city by area. Not only does the city have a PGA golf course and a municipal airport, it also has one prison. It is home to the professional, independent baseball team California City Whiptails, which is connected to the Pecos League. The Edwards Air Force Base is located south of California City is largely made up of working men and women who are residents of the city. The California City Correctional Center, the flight test operations of the Mojave Air and Space Port, the Kia and Hyundai Proving Grounds, and nearby cities, including Lancaster and Palmdale, all offer sources of employment to many California City residents.
Before the 1960s, the land of California City was mostly uninhabited, until a Franciscan missionary named Padre Francisco Garces set up camp at Castle Butte (now, California City) during the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition. According to history, in 1958, a real estate developer and professor of sociology named Nat Mendelsohn bought 80,000 acres of land in the Mohave Desert, which would eventually be deemed California City. Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan for Mendelsohn, and the land he anticipated would rival in prosperity and size to that of Los Angeles fell short. Today, a large undeveloped area with disintegrating paved roads meant to outline residential blocks, stretch far beyond the city’s developed area. Nonetheless, California City’s population has grown in recent years from a population of 3,200 people in 1984 to more than 14,000 by 2009. There are 3 assisted living facilities and 4 nursing homes located near California City.
A rising population of older adults throughout the United States is utilizing these types of long-term care settings. However, substantial research has shown that with this rise of elderly residents has come a higher rate of infection and antibiotic use, as well as an increasing rate of medication errors. Older adult residents in long-term care are highly vulnerable—physically, mentally, and emotionally—due to their increased frailty, poor health status, weaker immune systems, and a variety of comorbidities. These factors make the challenge of ensuring high quality of care in long-term care especially worrisome.
No older adult should ever become victimized due to abuse or neglect by long-term care staff. If you or your loved one has experienced this kind of mistreatment, please contact elder abuse lawyer Ben Yeroushalmi immediately for a free consultation. Our team of experienced lawyers and experts are ready to work diligently on your case until a just resolution is obtained.
