Buena Park, California
Welcome to the Buena Park website for the Law Offices of Ben Yeroushalmi. We have created this website in order to raise awareness about nursing home neglect, an unfortunate form of elder abuse that occurs in skilled nursing facilities all throughout California.
The city of Buena Park is located in Northern Orange County. As a suburb, it is home to approximately 80,530 people. Buena Park also serves as tourist destination, as there are several attractions located within the city, the most popular being, Knott's Berry Farm, a themed amusement park. This is only one of the many exciting amenities that the city has to offer. Also in the "E-Zone," short for Entertainment Zone, there is the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament and the Pirates Dinner Adventure. Although it is a city notorious for thrilling-seeking tourists and targeted towards younger generations, Buena Park is actually home to three skilled nursing facilities.
Because there is a variety of nursing homes to choose from, we would like to discuss certain prominent issues in care facilities today, so that you can choose the best one for yourself or your loved one. Falls are far too common of an occurrence in nursing homes nationwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the next seventeen seconds, an elderly adult will need to be treated in the hospital emergency room for a fall-related injury, and in the next thirty minutes, one will die from these injuries. More disturbing than these statistics themselves is the fact that most of these falls could have been avoidable in the first place with the proper prevention techniques. Within nursing homes, care plans must be drafted for each resident. These plans should be individualized to suit each and every resident's needs, and most importantly, must be strictly followed by the patient's daily caretakers. More often than not, however, nursing homes are inadequately staffed, so the available staff is unable to follow these care plans and consequently, accidents occur. Sometimes, in an attempt to prevent accidents from happening, caregivers will resort to the use of physical restraints when they are understaffed. However, this is a direct violation of Patients' Rights, which state that a patient cannot be restrained for reasons that lack a medical backing and that even under these circumstances, patients have the right to refuse treatment. Additionally, studies have confirmed that physical restraints do not actually have any affect in decreasing the risk of falls in nursing homes and that they are a direct cause of incontinence, pressure sores, depression, and isolation.
It becomes quite apparent that the root of most problems within nursing homes is directly attributable to understaffing. The occurrence of falls and the use of physical restraints are just a few of the serious consequences of a lack of sufficient and qualified staff. We believe that any occurrence that is preventable with proper staffing is a direct form of elder abuse. At the Law Offices of Ben Yeroushalmi, we feel that it is our duty to protect these victims of elder abuse and will fight with vigor and dedication until your loved one's rights are attained and a high quality of life is guaranteed.
