Welcome to the Huntington Beach website for the Law Offices of Ben Yeroushalmi. The attorneys at the Law Offices of Ben Yeroushalmi seek to educate the public on the issue of elder abuse and neglect. We are here as a guide to help you recognize the risks involved when placing your elderly loved one in a nursing home facility.
The beautiful city of Huntington Beach, also known as, “Surf City, USA”, is located in Orange County, and is known for its 9.5 mile stretch of sandy beach, sun and surf. According to the 2010 census, Huntington Beach is the largest beach city in Orange County with a population of 189,992. There are currently three skilled nursing home facilities in Huntington Beach. Additionally, home health care agencies are another option families in Huntington Beach may have.
When we place our loved ones under the care of skilled nursing facilities, we are inclined to assume that they will be receiving the highest level of care. Unfortunately, in many cases, that has not been the case. Many of our clients have come to us unaware of their rights or the rights of their loved ones. Don’t let your loved ones become victims of abuse or neglect. There are many ways that elder abuse and neglect of your loved ones may manifest itself within such facilities. One common example is the development of bed sores. Bed sores, also known as pressure ulcers, are often found on the sacral area, elbows, hips, heels, ankles, shoulders and the back of the head. Pressure ulcers frequently occur because residents may be placing constant pressure on certain areas of the body, thereby reducing blood flow to that area or causing the skin to become damaged by excessive friction or shear.
Unfortunately, pressure ulcers take a significant time to heal and are often the result of understaffing. They are most commonly found on elderly individuals who are bedridden or are unable to move independently. Understaffing frequently leads to the development of pressure ulcers because elderly individuals are often bedridden or need assistance in movement, yet are unable to receive the care and assistance they need from staff members. For example, if your loved one is confined to a wheelchair, they need to shift their weight every 15-20 minutes, and oftentimes require the assistance of a caregiver in doing so. Furthermore, our elderly love ones often need assistance in repositioning themselves. However, if there is not enough staff at the facility to assist them, your loved one may be in the same position for hours, which stops the flow of blood from reaching certain areas. If pressure ulcers are not properly treated they could develop into infection, serious pain, or even death.
The elderly and disabled should never be forced to compromise their comfort or be put at risk.
